architects—Alliance hosted students in a tour of their contemporary office in Downtown Toronto. The team at a—A presented to students a day in the life of an Architect, including a tour of the firm’s 3D printing space to highlight their projects. This space demonstrated to students how buildings and their environments can be perceived tangibly while in the consultation phase. Then, an outdoor activity led by staff gave students insights on the thought process behind architectural concepts and design principles. To accommodate the students’ visit, a—A provided a free lunch to all participants.
O2 Planning and Design hosted a fun and interactive tour at their office, diving into city-building careers. Staff from various fields, including urban planning, design, community engagement, and landscape architecture, presented a hypothetical project, and the order of which each team member would proceed in. Each expert took turns explaining their role, sparking discussions and asking students questions like how to redesign a waterlogged park area. The session, paired with a free lunch, gave students a glimpse into collaboration seen in urban planning.
| WSP hosted students in a tour of their office in Downtown Toronto. The topic of the tour was centered on streetscape and transportation, as supported by the Active Transportation and Complete Streets team. While students enjoyed a catered lunch, staff shared their projects and their experience working in the private sector. As an activity, the team provided students with a prompt to redesign a road between two buildings. Students creatively incorporated trees, bike lanes, and pedestrian paths alongside the reconceptualization of their roads. In the end, a vote was held, and the top three students received prizes! |

Located in 401 Richmond, Toronto’s art & culture hub, are offices for 8 80 Cities, The Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT), and Park People. With each team sharing an overview of their work, students joined us to learn more about placemaking, transportation, and park projects in the non-profit sector. Students enjoyed a pizza lunch in the studio. As an interactive group activity, students participated in an Audit Walk, a placemaking tool used to assess the pedestrianism of the public space around them.

Downsview Airport Lands
March 15, 2024
Northcrest Developments hosted our participants on a tour of the undeveloped Downsview Airport Lands. Students gained insights into the planning process behind the airport’s redevelopment, and what goes on behind the scenes. This tour was also a pre-cursor to the 2024 1UP Toronto Conference’s Design Jam, where students were tasked with reimagining a part of former airport. After the site tour, participants took part in a Hangar Skate! (photos: Garcia Creative)
